The Economy; and Star Wars versus Star Trek
Out of Time Mom had just finished a bottle of wine, with a little help from me, and she said that she thought that it would be nice if I would help her with another post this week. She said that Thursdays didn’t have a theme, so I should come up with something clever.
Being clever enough not to tell her I didn’t have the time or energy to write a blog post for her blog, I agreed and so here I am.
Just head right this way to find out what amazing things Out of Time Dad has been thinking about . . . .
1. The Economy
Yes, the Economy. Unemployment. Productivity. The Housing Market. “Income Inequality”. The Trade Deficit. Overseas Outsourcing. Globalization.
Why do I bother worrying about any of this stuff. I’m not an economist. I definitely can’t say I really understand any of this with any degree of expertise. But I do watch cable news and they talk about this stuff all the time so I know I’m supposed to worry about it.
I’m employed, but my company actually recently went bankrupt and restructured and a lot of people lost their jobs. I guess I was one of the lucky ones. I have noticed that house prices have pretty much nosedived and are continuing to do so in my area, which is good news if you are a buyer, but bad news if you’re a seller.
Out of Time Mom has been talking about buying a duplex and becoming landlords, as amazingly enough, rents have been going up while house prices have dropped in this area. I’m not the most handy of handy men, my household expertise lends itself more to setting up networks and fixing Out of Time Toddler’s broken toys. (As an aside, I want to give Out of Time Teen a shoutout for his own well developed trouble shooting skills.)
And what the heck is the story behind gas prices, huh? Every time the stock market goes up, gas prices skyrocket. If most of your money goes toward investments in the stock market, you’ll be happy. If most of your money goes toward expenses like food, clothes, gas, you’ll be hit hard.
On the one hand you’ve got Luke, Leia, Han, Chewie, Anakin, Obi-Wan, Amidala, Yoda, etc. On the other you have Kirk, Spock, Bones, Scotty, Picard, Data, Riker, etc. They’re both science fiction stories (you know they are because they have space ships and ray guns). But can someone say one is better than the other?
I grew up loving Star Wars, I had a ton of action figures, loved watching the movies, I even fondly remember the Christmas Special. I also remember watching reruns of Star Trek on TV, as well as seeing the movies (Wrath of Khan was the best, it is a scientific fact). How could I choose one over the other?
Star Wars is an epic mythic journey of Shakespearean scale, involving a noble bloodline, wizards, magical swords, a rogue with a heart of gold, and R2D2. Star Trek is a story of normal men and women facing a new frontier and overcoming life-threatening obstacles using only their training, courage, and wits (and Kirk’s charm, let’s not forget that!)
Time to feed the Out of Time Toddler!
Perhaps we’ll touch on more THINGS TO THINK ABOUT in the future!
